A

active document

The document displayed in the active document window, affected by the View and other commands. A document can appear in more than one document window at once. As long as one of those windows is active, the document itself is active.

active document window

This window appears "on top" of all other document windows (unless tiled), and its title bar is a different color. It contains one view of the active document, the one to which the chosen commands apply. To activate a window, click in its title bar.

active edit layer

The "top" edit layer, the one that can be marked up and edited. Selected with the Layer image\lgarrow_shg.gif Active command or the Layers window.

active multipage

An active document that happens to be a multipage document. See current multipage.

active raster layer

The raster layer that is affected by the Raster menu commands and can be cut, copied, and pasted. Selected with the Layer image\lgarrow_shg.gif Active command or the Layers window.

algorithm

A prescribed set of well-defined steps used to solve a problem or conduct an operation.

annotation

A textual note placed on an image, signified by an icon: image\draw_ann_shg.gif . You place annotations with the Annotation tool.

API

Application programming interface. The API allows programmers to integrate Imagenation with other programs, to control the program remotely, and to customize the user interface.

arc

A vector object in the shape of a chord of a circle. A "chord" is a straight line connecting two points on a curve or a curved surface.

aspect ratio

The relationship of width to height. When aspect ratio is maintained, the image is scaled proportionally. When it is not, the image is "stretched" vertically or horizontally when scaled.

attributes

The characteristics (size, appearance, format, orientation, and so on) of an existing object, layer file, or page file.

B

banner

A text string, similar to a header or footer in a word processing program, that can be printed, faxed, or merged at the top or bottom of each page. The banner appears outside the image boundaries. Compare stamp.

bilevel raster

Black-and-white image. A raster image in which data is stored as one data bit for one dot (or pixel) of raster data. The data is either on or off (black or white) with no intermediate status.

bitmap

A raster image, a collection of dots called pixels that make up an image.

C

cap

The end point of an object line. It can be rounded or squared.

CFG file

A CFG file is a configuration file. Configuration files define whether certain menus, commands, and icons are displayed. Normally you would just use the CFG file that matches your edition (for example, the OVA CFG file for the Office-View-Annotate edition of Imagenation). You can, however, select another CFG file to use. You can also edit the CFG file if you have the Imagenation SRC file. See SRC file.

check boxes

The settings in dialog boxes that can be selected ( þ or x ) and cleared (o).

CLF document

See Spicer Multilayer Page (.clf).

CMC

CMC = computer-mediated communicaton. E-mail programs can be CMC-compliant.

color raster

A raster image in which combinations of red-green-blue (RGB) form the color pixels.

command line

The command line instructs an operating system (such as MS-DOS or Windows) to carry out a command or to run a program. It consists of the command name followed by a list of arguments specific to it.

compression

A technique for making raster data sizes smaller, so that they consume less RAM and disk space. A raster file in its native or raw form is uncompressed. Compression is achieved by applying mathematical algorithms to the data storage process.

configuring

Defining the default attributes.

current multipage

The displayed portion of the active multipage, whether or not that is an embedded page.

current page

The page displayed in the active document window that is affected by the commands. Its title bar is displayed in reverse field.

D

DAS-format multipage

data format

See file format.

defaults

Preset conditions and attributes that determine the operation of Imagenation. The default value is automatically assigned unless you specifically request another one. See preferences and options.

deselect

To "turn off" an object or file that is selected so that it is no longer ready to be altered. See select.

deskewing

Straightening a crooked raster image.

despeckling

Removing unwanted black and white specks (or noise) from a raster image. See noise.

Detail window

A floating window that shows a magnified view of the pointer location at the selected scale factor (by default 1:1).

DNS (Domain Name Service)

A service that translates human-readable hierarchical domain names into IP addresses. See IP address.

document types

The classification of documents according to the data they contain. Imagenation can read raster, vector, and text document types, in certain formats. Raster files are made up of dots, vector files of objects and equations, and text files of text with formatting.

These basic document types are combined to create other document types: multilayer page documents, multipage documents, and sets.

dpcm, dpi

Dots per centimeter, Dots per inch. All are measures of image resolution. See resolution.

E

edit layers

A layer that can contain vector objects, raster pastes, and the text from text documents, but not full raster images.

edition

The various "versions" of Imagenation, such as View-Redline and View-Markup-Edit.

EDT files

See Spicer Vector (.edt).

EED

EED = Extended Entity Data. In AutoCAD, different programs can be registered with a particular AutoCAD (DXF or DWG) drawing. Data from that program can then be attached to any AutoCAD entity in that drawing. This data is called EED.

Erase Area

An eraser tool that erases in a specified shape--box, circle, ellipse, or polygon. The "erase" is created by drawing on the active edit layer in the background color, which hides the underlying layers. The erased area is not copied. See also Rubout.

external linear dimensions

Dimension objects with arrowheads and extension lines at each end. The dimension text appears in the center of the line. Compare internal linear dimensions.

F

file format

The way the information is stored in a raster, vector, or text document. This is often indicated by three-character extensions, such as .dxf, .rlc, or .mil.

floating windows

Small windows that can be placed anywhere on your desktop--that is, they "float" above all other windows.

font

The complete assortment of characters for one style and size of a particular typeface, including uppercase and lowercase characters, figures, and punctuation marks.

global

Settings that affect all documents, objects, or tools.

group

A collection of objects logically connected so that they can be moved, changed, or deleted as though they were a single object.

H

hatch

A fill pattern consisting of parallel line segments, or, in the case of vector hatch patterns, a variety of patterns. Hatch is a fill option for boxes, polygons, circles, and ellipses.

header

Data attached to the beginning of a file that describes or controls the actions that apply to the following data, such as rotation, mirroring, data type, and compression.

hotspot

Objects on edit layers that send messages to associated programs when placed or activated or both. You can place hotspots directly or convert existing objects into hotspots.

I

Image.ini

The default name for the initialization file that defines how Imagenation operates by default. You can set most defaults using the Preferences or other dialog boxes and commands, but some require that you edit the Image.ini file directly using a text editor.

imaging

Recording "human readable" images--pictures, images, notes, text, and so on--into "machine-readable" formats--microfiche, computer data, videotape, OCR output, ASCII text, and so forth.

.ini

The usual extension for initialization files. See Image.ini.

integer

Any rational, whole number; that is, not a decimal or fraction.

internal linear dimensions

Dimension lines with arrowheads at both ends and text in the middle. They have no extension lines. Compare external linear dimensions.

IP address

A 32-bit numeric address identifying a computer on a TCP/IP network. For example, 10.1.1.1.

ISIS

Image and Scanner Interface Specification. ISIS is a registered trademark of Pixel Translations, Incorporated.

italic

The right-slanted style of any typeface. Italic

K

K

An acronym for kilobyte. Literally, this means 1,000 bytes, but to a computer, it is actually 1024 bytes.

keyname

The individual settings within an INI file section. Each keyname has a value, which is stated after the equal sign (=).

L

label

A text string that is associated with each symbol, layer, page, multipage, or set as it is saved. It can be up to 80 characters long and can include spaces. It is often used to label files for insertion into a database. Labels are displayed in document window title bars.

layer

Two-dimensional planes that can be overlaid on one another. Combined on a single page, the planes can constitute a hybrid image--pictorial data made up of multiple data types. Raster layers contain raster data only. Edit layers can contain vector objects, raster pastes, and text documents.

Layers window

A window that lists all layers on the current page. When you select a layer name or names and click them with the right mouse button, you get a submenu of commands that you can apply to that layer or to all layers.

leader text dimensions

Dimension lines with text at one end and an arrowhead at the other. They have no extension lines and can be angled.

Line Width window

A floating window that you can use to select the line or frame width for the active tool. As you move the red line up and down in the Line Width window, the current value (in the selected units) appears in the title bar.

log file

A text document, called Image.log by default, to which Imagenation writes error information. Its name and location are specified in the [Imagenation] section of the Win.ini file.

M

magnify

See zoom in.

Markup toolbar

The toolbar that contains the Tool and Group buttons. Selected and deselected in the View, Toolbars submenu. Unavailable in the View and Office-View-Annotate editions.

MB

An acronym for MegaByte, which literally means one million bytes, but precisely represents 1024 kilobytes.

Measurements window

The Measurements window appears when you choose Preference image\lgarrow_shg.gif Measurements. It lists the active measure tool, and updates pointer position and measurement values as you measure a region or draw an object. You can change certain Measurements window options by clicking in it with the right mouse button.

MER

Minimum enclosing rectangle, the spatial limits of each object drawn or placed in Imagenation. The MER becomes visible when you select objects. The short-dashed box around each selected object is called the Object MER, and the long-dashed one around the whole group is the WorkGroup MER.

merge

See rasterize.

monochrome

An image or screen having only background and foreground colors. Same as black-and-white or bilevel.

multilayer page

A page consisting of two or more layers. Multiple-layer page.

multipage document

A document file made up of more than one page. Multiple page document.

N

NetBios name

An alphanumeric name assigned to a computer on a network using NetBIOS (Network Basic Input/Output System).

network drive

A drive that acts like a drive on a computer, but instead of storing information on the hard disk, it stores information that you have access to on a network.

noise

Irrelevant specks or marks added to images in the scanning or redlining process.

O

object

Objects are the base elements that make up edit layers. They include arcs, circles, boxes, lines, text, annotations, cuts, erases, and pastes. You place and modify objects on the active edit layer.

OCR

Optical character recognition. Software that translates bitmapped scans or faxes of printed alphanumeric characters into ASCII or formatted text.

ODMA

Open document management API--interaction between a document management system and client programs.

OVA

Office-View-Annotate edition of Imagenation, which allows for viewing and limited annotation of text files and raster images.

OLE

A communication protocol used to link Windows-based programs. When you embed or link objects, your document can contain information that was created in different programs, and you can edit any of this from inside your document.

operating system

Windows, UNIX, and Macintosh are three different operating systems.

optimize

To write or modify a program to achieve maximum efficiency in a specific area, such as memory allocation.

options

Used to change attributes for the active document or layer for the current session only. See preferences.

P

page

A page refers to one or more stacked layers. However, a single layer is normally only referred to as a "page" when it appears in a window with other pages, or when it is saved under the Spicer Multilayer Page (.clf) or Spicer Document (.smf) format.

pixel

The smallest element of a raster image--one dot. Abbreviation (more or less) of picture element.

points

A typeset measurement equal to 1/72nd of an inch. Points are typically used to measure text.

polylines

Vector objects in the shape of joined, straight lines. You draw them with the Polyline tool by defining all the line end points.

preferences

Settings in a program that you adjust to your personal taste for current or future sessions, or both. See defaults, options.

preview image

A reduced-resolution view of a drawing that can be loaded and displayed before the main image is to decrease load time.

RAM

Random access memory. The primary memory in a computer used by programs to perform tasks while the computer is on.

raster image

A data type consisting of dots (also known as pixels) that are turned on or off--in bilevel rasters--or are assigned a shade of gray or a color. The dots are stacked into lines known as scan lines, which are themselves stacked to form the image.

rasterize

To convert a vector image or text document into a raster, or to combine two or more layers (of any type) into one raster layer. Done with the Raster image\lgarrow_shg.gif Rasterize command.

raster layer

A layer containing a raster image. It cannot contain vector objects or text documents.

reduce

See zoom out.

Reference window

A small window that shows the entire current page, and indicates (with the crossed box) which part of the page appears in the active document window. It can be used to magnify and reduce the page, and to scroll around it.

Reset

In Preference dialog boxes, to restore the values last saved; in the Raster command dialog boxes, to select again.

resolution

Drawing pixels (or dots) per unit of image in the horizontal and vertical directions. Determines the fineness or coarseness of the image and affects the size of the file.

RGB

Red-green-blue, the components of color in raster pixels and vector objects.

Rubout

Freehand eraser tool. The "erase" is created by drawing on the active edit layer in the background color, which hides the underlying layers. See also Erase Area.

S

scale factor

The ratio of screen pixels to image pixels. For example, a scale factor of 0.2 (1:5) indicates one screen pixel for five image pixels and a scale factor of 2 (2:1) indicates two screen pixels for one image pixel.

section

In an INI file, the text enclosed in square brackets that gives the category for the keynames that follow.

security key

A security key, also called a dongle, that regulates the use of a program. The key is attached to the computer to monitor the program's use. Security keys can monitor one computer, or many over a network.

select

To mark an item so that an action can be carried out on it. You usually select an item by clicking it or by pressing a key. After selecting it, you choose the action that you want to affect it (such as OK or Move).

server

A computer on a network, which is usually dedicated to one task and shared by clients. For example, the server could store images that could then be viewed in Imagenation.

session

The period of time in which Imagenation is running.

set

A grouping of any combination of other sets, multipage documents, single page documents, raster images, vector images, and text documents. When opened with the Open as Multipage check box cleared, each file in a set appears in its own window.

shape font

The type of font used by AutoCAD. Shape font files usually have .shp or .shx extensions.

speckle

A collection of extraneous pixels on a raster image.

Spicer Document (.smf)

A file that can contain all the image data for any number of pages. Usually has an .smf extension. When opened, Spicer Documents are displayed in one window. The format is defined by Spicer.

Spicer Multilayer Page (.clf)

A component list file, a single-page document file composed of a list of layers. When you open a Spicer Multilayer Page, the layers are gathered in order and displayed in the document window, one on top of the other. The format is defined by Spicer.

Spicer Multipage (.das)

A collection of any combination of single or stacked layers (pages) and other multipage documents. Made up of a list of file names starting with the first page file followed by each consecutive page file. The format is defined by Spicer.

Spicer Vector (.edt)

Files in the vector format defined by Spicer. They usually have an .edt (for "edit") extension.

SRC file

Source configuration file. If you have access to the Image.src file, you can edit it to change Imagenation's defaults. Then the Image.cfg file is compiled from the Image.src file to create custom versions of Imagenation. See CFG file.

stamp

A text string that can be placed behind or in front of an image, and that acts as part of the page, and not part of the actual image. The stamp appears within the image boundaries.

Status Bar

Information that is provided at the bottom of the Imagenation window. Selected and deselected in the View menu.

strikeout

Text with a line drawn through it. Strikeout. Sometimes called "strikethrough."

SVE

Scan-View-Edit, edition of Imagenation that allows scanning, viewing, and editing of raster images. It does not offer markup support.

symbol

A group of objects created by selecting and saving vector objects. Symbols can be assigned to the Symbol or Hotspot tool for placement on an active edit layer.

Symbols palette

A floating window that displays an image of all symbols available in the defined Symbols directory. You can select symbols to place from this palette.

text document

A document file that contains text and (sometimes) formatting information. They are often created with word processing programs.

text editor

A program, such as Notepad, used to create and edit basic text documents. It usually works in pure ASCII, with no formatting or layout features.

Thumbnails window

A window that shows a preview of each page of a multipage document, and indicates (with the highlighted box) which page appears in the active document window.

tiled images

Images saved in several small pieces, called "tiles," that are stored and decompressed individually.

ToolTip

An explanation that appears when you place the pointer on a button.

TrueType fonts

Fonts that are standard to Windows. They can be sized to any height and print exactly as they appear on-screen.

twips

Abbreviation for twentieth (1/20th) of a point, a "point" being a typeset measurement equal to 1/72nd of an inch. (Therefore, twips equal 1/1440th of an inch.) Twips are used in RTF files and can be selected for text objects.

V

View edition of Imagenation, which has all view functions, but no markup or edit ones.

value

The part of an .ini file keyname that follows the equal sign (=). In the Imagenation Help, values in italic indicate "replace with other text." Values separated by | indicate options.

vector images

Images that are defined mathematically and displayed graphically. Used in CAD and engineering software for precise, mathematically editable designs. In Imagenation they are stored on edit layers.

VGA

Video graphics array. Video display standard.

VM

View-Markup edition of Imagenation, which has all the viewing and markup functions, but no Raster commands.

VME

View-Markup-Edit edition of Imagenation, which has all the Imagenation functions (including scanning, in the SVME edition).

VR

View-Redline edition of Imagenation, which provides a limited number of viewing and markup tools.

watermark

zoom in

Enlarge the display size of the image so that can you see part of it in more detail. Also called magnify.

zoom out

Reduce the display size of a page so that you can see more of it. As a result, the image looks smaller and less detailed. Also called reduce.
