An active edit layer must appear on the page before you can use any of the Tool or Group menu commands, and most of the Edit menu. One way to activate an edit layer is to place a new one on top of the page.

To create an edit layer:

1. image\cmlayera_shg.gif Choose Layer ® New.

2. If the Alter Layer Attributes dialog box appears, type the Label for the new layer and click OK.

A new, blank layer is placed on top of the page. Unless you have already specified a label, it is called "Untitled#" (where # = an integer).
