A banner is a text string, similar to a header or footer in a word processing program, that can be printed, faxed, or rasterized at the top or bottom of each page. The banner appears outside the image boundaries.
A stamp is a text string that can be placed "behind" or "on top of" an image, and that acts as part of the page, and not part of the actual image. The stamp appears within the image boundaries.
