Imagenation and Image a•X answers

File Formats

What file formats can Imagenation read from and write to?

Review the format32.txt file located in your Imagenation directory.

When I load a PDF, TIFF or GIF file, all I see is a blank page.

The PDF, TIFF and GIF formats use a compression utility called LZW. In order to properly view these files, you should purchase a copy of Imagenation with "LZW enabled".

Evaluation Software and Maintenance Agreements

How long can I use the evaluation software before it times out?

The evaluation version of Imagenation times out 30 days after installation. An expiry warning notice appears 15 days before expiry.

Are upgrades automatically shipped to valid maintenance agreement holders upon each new release?

No. We designate one specific release per year as GMUs (General Maintenance Upgrade Releases), and this release is automatically shipped. Point releases are distributed to maintenance holders only when requested. For more information, email maintenance@spicer.com.

Installation, Operating System Support, and System Requirements

Does Imagenation 6.02 or earlier work on Windows 2000?

Yes, Imagenation 6.02 or earlier will work with Windows 2000, but a change needs to be made to the client's permissions with regards to the registry. Windows 2000 and Windows NT are different in the way that they handle the registry and its users. Windows NT allows every user the ability to make changes to the registry, when both read and write privileges are given. Windows 2000 does NOT allow the user to make changes to the registry. It will allow only read privileges. The workaround steps for this are as follows:

  1. Log on to Windows 2000 as an administrator.

  2. Run regedt32.exe.

  3. Under the Security menu and Permissions give the local host permissions to have full control to HK_Local_Machine-Software.

The reason why this has to be done is that Imagenation must write to the registry on start up. This problem has been fixed in Imagenation 6.1. Remember, making adjustments to the registry and granting permissions to some people can cause problems. This should be done at your own risk.

How do I install Imagenation in an automated process?

From the DOS Prompt, run setup.exe -r. Complete the entire install following the onscreen instructions. All the selected options will be recorded in a macro file called setup.iss. To run the install with no intervention, type setup.exe -s. at a DOS prompt. Ensure that the setup.iss file is located in the same directory as setup.exe.

When trying to install Imagenation I get an invalid authorization code. How can I resolve this?

Be sure to type EXACTLY what is listed on the label as it is case sensitive. If Name and Company Name are listed on the label, use that name, not your own.

How do I perform a client - server installation of Imagenation?

To install the Imagenation Server software:

  1. Attach the hardware key to the parallel port, LPT1.

  2. Insert the Imagenation CD into your CD-ROM drive. Choose Install Imagenation, and follow the on-screen instructions.
The Registration Key will unlock and copy a Client folder to the location you select.

  3. Do not start Imagenation after the installation is complete.

  4. Choose Install Other Products and Files.

  5. Choose Support Files.

  6. From the Rainbow Security Key Drivers and License Managers list, choose Windows 32-bit IPX/SPX, NetBIOS, and TCP/IP server. Follow the on-screen instructions.
A message appears when the driver is installed.

  7. From the Server, choose Start -> Programs -> Windows 32-bit IPX SPX, NetBIOS, and TCP/IP Server to start the NetSentinel security key driver program (called Nsrvgx.exe and installed with the Imagenation Server software).
If the NetSentinel security key program is not running, Imagenation will not run and a Security violation error message will appear.

You can now install Imagenation to the Client:

  1. From the Client, browse to the Client folder on the Server at the location you selected (in step 3 of the Server installation), \Spicer\Image\Client, by default.

  2. Double click Setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions to install Imagenation on the Client.

  3. Copy Nslms324.dll from the Server to the Imagenation folder on the Client.

  4. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive of the Client.

  5. Choose Install Other Products and Files.

  6. Choose Support files.

  7. Choose Security Key Driver.

  8. Choose Functions -> Install Sentinal Driver.
A message appears when the driver is installed.

  9. Reboot the Client machine.
The Imagenation Client software is now installed.

Is there ASPI layer support with Windows 2000, XP and ME?

With Windows 2000, XP and ME there is no ASPI driver support. Please refer to the Adaptec Web site for a more detailed explanation on this matter.

Integrations

How do I integrate a 3rd party OCR package?

In order to integrate a 3rd party OCR package, there are a few things you need to do first. Through the DDE API, you can add external commands to the Imagenation command table. After adding external commands, you can work with them through the API or through the CFG file. External commands are identified with any integer greater than or equal to 4096. The following procedure describes how to add a new command, with the identifier 4097, to the Imagenation command table using the DDE API.

To create an external command using Imagenation’s DDE API:

  1. Set up a notification on NotifyIM - MenuIntercept.

  2. Send the transaction [SetMenuStatus(4097,1)] to Imagenation to enable the command.

  3. Send the transaction [InterceptMenuAction(4097, 1)] to Imagenation. It tells Imagenation to send you menu intercepts.

    In the SRC file:

  4. Add the user interface text for the external command, including the name, Status Bar message, and ToolTip. For details, see the Configure Commands topic in the CFG Help file. Help files can be downloaded here.

  5. Add the external command to an Imagenation menu. For details, see Configure Menu Bars and Menus in the CFG Help file. Help files can be downloaded here.

  6. If required, add the external command to a button bar. For details, see Define Buttons and Button Bars in the CFG Help file. Help files can be downloaded here.

A NotifyIM - MenuIntercept notification will be received whenever the user selects 4097 in a menu or button bar. If you want to enable or disable the external command, your integration must handle this functionality.

Note: All of the user interface elements that you can define in a CFG file for an external command can also be defined using DDE API transactions. For more information, refer to the Imagenation DDE API Help (ddeapi.hlp).

When performing an integration, which files need to be included in the CAB files? ActiveX for example? Do all the integration options require the same files to be included?

The following link will open our online help which describes what needs to be in the CAB files: Online help: Distributing your application

I have a PDM that doesn't work with the current release of Imagenation. What could be wrong?

Imagenation upgraded our ODMA support to ODMA 2.0 as of Imagenation 6.10. If your PDM product doesn't support ODMA 2.0, you will need to upgrade your ODMA level.

How do I create a pen map file (.spm)?

Use the program Editmask.exe (this can be found on the Imagenation CD, along with a Pen Mask Help file).

A blank page is outputted during printing to a HP Deskjet series printer (450-890c). How do I resolve this?

In the Image.ini file, add the following line:

Are Vidar Scanners supported on Windows 2000 and XP?

Vidar has released a readme file that outlines implementing support of the new STI on Windows 2000 and XP. Please read this document if you are using either one of those operating systems and a Vidar scanner.[readme.txt]

How do I set up Imagenation to automatically rotate my images during a scan?

Rotation during Scanning within Imagenation is only available when you are scanning and reviewing the image before saving. In order to activate the Rotation feature, the Rotation check box and the Review check box must be selected in the Scan dialog box.

By selecting both of these check boxes, Imagenation scans the image to memory and shows you a preview of the image on the screen (rotated). Once you have reviewed the image, you have the option to save.

Please note: In Imagenation 6.22 and earlier releases, the rotation button has been available to select whether or not the Review check box was selected. This behavior was incorrect. The rotation button should be dimmed out, unless the Review button has been selected. This was corrected in 6.3.

How do I set Line Widths in Imagenation?

Several settings in the Image.INI file can be used to control line width. The System Administrator Help contains details.

Minimum Output Line Width = # units eg 2 cm
Use this in the [System] section to alter line widths. It will apply to the print, display and raster as long as you have nothing else specified in the [Print] section.

Minimum Output Text Width = # units eg 2 cm
This setting works the same as above, but it applies to text instead of lines.

Apply Print settings to rasterize = 0 or 1
Apply Print settings to view = 0 or 1

These 2 settings are used in the [System] section. If there are no settings in the [Print] section then, the ones in the [System] section are used.

Minimum Text Width = 0 | 1 | -1 | -2, size, units
This setting, in the [Print] section, defines the minimum width used for printing stroke fonts such as Roman. The possible values are:

0 = no minimum text width defined
1 = text width defined in this setting is used
-1 = text width defined by the "Minimum Output Text Width" keyname in the [System] section is used
-2 = text width defined in this setting will also apply to printed lines
size = minimum width to use for printing stroke fonts
units = pels | in | ft | cm | mm | m | twips | pts

The default is Minimum Text Width = 0, 0, pels.

Minimum Vector Width = 0 | 1, size, units
This setting is the same as above, but applies to vector width.

I have installed ViewCafé on a non-English Operating system and receive the following error: "Error Occurred during initialization of VM, java/lang/ClassNotFoundException: sun/io/ByteToCharMS932". How is this resolved?

Your Java JRE is not installed correctly. You need to uninstall it through the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Once it is removed, reboot your computer and then click the link below to visit the Sun site. Download the International JRE directly from the site and install it. See also Loading the App Server for ViewCafé on a non-English operating system.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-windows.html

When installing the JRE, I receive the error: 'Exception in thread "main" java.net.SocketException: setsockopt() TCP_NODELAY (code=10055)'. What could be wrong and how do I resolve this issue?

User must have local administrator privileges if using NT 4.0 SP6. Problem is corrected in SP6A by Microsoft.

After I have performed an integration with ViewCafé, I tried selecting Help from the menu in the applet, and an error occurred. How can I resolve this?

You need to copy the WebHelp directory and its contents into the directory of where you placed the ViewCafe.jar file. In the default install, this will be \Inetpub\WebHelp.

How do I set up CGI on IIS 5.0?

Below are the instructions that you would need to follow in order to accomplish this.

  • Create a folder in your "InetPub" folder (or the root of wherever your web sites are located) called "Scripts".
  • Set the permissions on the folder to read-only for web clients (do not allow the permissions to propagate to subfolders).
  • Copy your script into the folder and set the permissions to "read+execute".
  • In the "Internet Services Manager", go to the web site that you want the script to run on.
  • Create a Virtual Directory called "cgi-bin" in the root of your site.
  • Assign "Read" permissions to the home directory.
  • Under "Application Settings", make sure that "Execute Permissions" are set to "Scripts and Executables".

When your code calls the "cgi-bin" directory, it should re-direct to the "scripts" folder.

In IIS 6.0 there has been a greater Security lockdown. Note the following:

Requests for Static Files Return 404 Error

For requests to static content, this version of IIS serves requests for files with known file name extensions only, a feature called Known Extensions. If a request is made for a resource whose file name extension is not mapped to a known extension in the MimeMap property, IIS denies the request and logs a 404 error with the substatus code of 3 (404.3) in the W3C Extended log files (by default). To prevent disclosure of configuration information, IIS is configured to return the generic 404 custom error page by default on this denial. To resolve this error, use IIS manager to add the file extension to the Multipurpose Internet Mail Exchange (MIME) map on a specific directory or Web site.

If adding the specific file extension to the MIME map does not remedy the problem, turn off the Known Extensions feature on a specific directory or a Web site. To turn off the Known Extensions feature and thereby allow IIS to serve files with any extension for a specific site or directory, add the *,application/octet-stream value to the list of MIME maps (enter the asterisk in the Extension text box and application/octet-stream in the MIME Type text box on the MIME Type dialog box). For more information on how to add this value to the MIME map, see Working with MIME Types.

If you are still experiencing problems, you can turn off the Known Extensions feature on the Web server and allow IIS to serve files with any extension for all sites and directories. Turn off the Known Extensions feature by adding the *,application/octet-stream to the global MIME map. You must wait until the worker process has recycled or restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW service) before changes take effect.

Core Server

If I have multiple Core Servers on the same machine, do I require separate sets of properties files for each Core Server? If required, what files need to be duplicated for the second CoreServer?

You can run multiple Core Servers with one set of properties files. However, if the properties for a second Core Server will be different, you need to create a new directory for the second set of files. Spicer recommends running no more than two Core Servers on a single machine.

If you decide to have different sets of properties for each Core Server, you require the following files in each Core Server directory:

  • CoreServer.properties
  • Build.properties
  • Doc2D.properties
  • FontSubstitution.properties
  • DocumentHandler.properties
  • java.policy.coreserver
  • Markup.properties

When configuring multiple Core Servers on different machines, what properties files are required for each ViewCafé component?

For the Core Server:

  • CoreServer.properties
  • Build.properties (Optional - Only required when using event logging)
  • Doc2D.properties
  • FontSubstitution.properties
  • DocumentHandler.properties
  • java.policy.coreserver
  • Markup.properties

For the App Server:

  • AppServer.properties
  • AppServerGUI.properties (And any other GUI interfaces - for multiple languages)
  • Build.properties (Optional - Only required when using event logging)
  • java.policy.appserver

For the License Manager:

  • LicenseManager.properties
  • Build.properties (Optional - Only required when using event logging)

For the Document Handler:

  • DocumentHandler.properties
  • Build.properties (Optional - Only required when using event logging)

For the Client:

  • Build.properties (Optional - Only required when using event logging)

How do I disable the Markup Explorer?

The Markup Explorer cannot be disabled but can be hidden. In the Client applet, choose the Windows > Markups menu item to remove the check mark beside it. ViewCafé doesn't disable this feature because whether a client has the permission to view only or mark up, all clients have permission to view existing markups and layers.

Which files are required with each component?

For the Core Server:

  • CoreServer.properties
  • Build.properties
  • Doc2D.properties
  • FontSubstitution.properties
  • DocumentHandler.properties (if using the built-in DocumentHandler)
  • java.policy.coreserver
